Poem: DRUGGIE WITHIN US | Exploring the Human Craving for Emotional Highs and Lows

DRUGGIE WITHIN US
Sometimes I think that our body is nothing
but a pain seeking thing,
and we roam around the eternity looking for it.
Such pain that is not life threatening immediately
I mean getting blasted by bomb kills you,
without much hurting you.
What we seek is a daily dose of needle pinch,
something that remains on the border of pleasure and pain.
What we seek is coffee and heartbreak.
That’s all we care about
that’s all we want.
Something to stimulate us,
something that would shake us and our brain
so we start to wonder, imagine, work and build up expectations
and when the expectations come crashing down
and bam we wake up to another day,
seeking another stimulant and then we go again,
making stuff up feeding our expectations.

As I sat down to write “Druggie Within Us,” I found myself reflecting on the curious nature of human beings. Our bodies and minds seem to constantly crave a delicate balance between pleasure and pain. This isn’t about the kind of pain that brings life to an abrupt halt; rather, it’s about those small, everyday discomforts that seem to define our existence.

Think about it: what is it that we truly seek in our daily lives? We often find ourselves yearning for something that stirs our senses, that keeps us on the edge. It’s the bittersweet blend of a morning coffee and a late-night heartbreak. These moments, as trivial as they might seem, are what drive us. They push us to think, to dream, to build expectations. Yet, just as quickly as we build those dreams, reality often comes crashing down, leaving us in search of the next stimulant to keep us going.

This cycle of seeking and crashing is almost like a daily dose of a drug – a metaphorical needle prick that keeps us alive, awake, and moving. We thrive on these experiences, no matter how fleeting they might be. It’s fascinating how we create these scenarios in our minds, feeding our expectations, and then watching them crumble, only to start the process all over again.

The poem was born out of these musings. I wanted to capture that essence – the way we, as humans, are perpetually on the lookout for that next emotional high or low. It’s a dance between pleasure and pain, a continuous loop that defines our days and nights. We are, in a way, addicted to these small moments that shake us, wake us up, and make us feel alive.

In writing “Druggie Within Us,” I wasn’t aiming to teach or preach. Instead, I wanted to spark a conversation about these everyday experiences that shape our lives. It’s about recognizing that, deep down, we are all seeking something to stir our souls, to keep us engaged in the grand narrative of life.

So, as you read the poem, I hope you find a bit of yourself in it. Maybe you’ll recognize those moments of seeking and crashing in your own life. And perhaps, like me, you’ll come to appreciate the delicate balance between the pleasures and pains that make us who we are. After all, it’s this very balance that keeps us moving forward, always in search of the next heartbeat that will carry us through to another day.
